This insightful panel, guided by Carolina González-Vives, managing partner at HIDRA Design and director of IE’s Master in Real Estate Development, brought together accomplished women from diverse backgrounds. Panelists included Celma de Almeida, CEO of Blue Buffalo Capital and co-founder of Lavradio Design; Andrea Palmer, chair of Climate Risk Working Group at PGGM; and Michelle Aoun, project manager at SBB Real Estate. Each of these leaders shared their personal experiences, highlighting the challenges, triumphs, and motivations that drove them forward..
Finding Purpose: the “Why” behind their Real Estate Journeys

Andrea Palmer talked about how she “fell” into real estate and soon saw an opportunity to promote sustainability within the industry. “If I join this firm, I can make Chicago real estate much more sustainable,” Andrea shared, “there is no energy transition without real estate. It is an important part of the solution to the global challenges we are facing.”
Celma de Almeida shared her jump into real estate, recounting how she was initially uncertain about her career direction, but then saw the tangible impact of her projects, which not only meet investors’ goals but also benefit the communities they serve.
Then there’s Michelle Aoun, who entered real estate after graduating with a degree in architecture, wanting more than just architectural design: “My most rewarding task is to work on projects that really make a difference in people’s daily lives.”
