Women in Real Estate: IE University Shines a spotlight on breaking barriers and building the future

In the fast-evolving world of real estate, women are leaving indelible marks in an industry traditionally dominated by men. In recognizing these innovative achievements, IE University recently hosted a dynamic event, Real Estate on the Spot: Women in Real Estate Career Paths, celebrating the journeys and successes of women who are transforming the industry.

This insightful panel, guided by Carolina González-Vives, managing partner at HIDRA Design and director of IE’s Master in Real Estate Development, brought together accomplished women from diverse backgrounds. Panelists included Celma de Almeida, CEO of Blue Buffalo Capital and co-founder of Lavradio Design; Andrea Palmer, chair of Climate Risk Working Group at PGGM; and Michelle Aoun, project manager at SBB Real Estate. Each of these leaders shared their personal experiences, highlighting the challenges, triumphs, and motivations that drove them forward..

Finding Purpose: the “Why” behind their Real Estate Journeys

Through the dialogue among these figures, each of them shared a unique path. Andrea Palmer talked about how she “fell” into real estate and soon saw an opportunity to promote sustainability within the industry. “If I join this firm, I can make Chicago real estate much more sustainable,” Andrea shared, “there is no energy transition without real estate. It is an important part of the solution to the global challenges we are facing.”

Celma de Almeida shared her jump into real estate, recounting how she was initially uncertain about her career direction, but then saw the tangible impact of her projects, which not only meet investors’ goals but also benefit the communities they serve.

Then there’s Michelle Aoun, who entered real estate after graduating with a degree in architecture, wanting more than just architectural design: “My most rewarding task is to work on projects that really make a difference in people’s daily lives.”

Education: the Foundation of Success in Real Estate

At the heart of the discussion was the power of education in shaping careers and creating leaders. IE University’s Master in Real Estate Development played a pivotal role for each of them, providing essential skills and knowledge. For Michelle, who transitioned from architecture, the program gave her the financial and strategic expertise she needed. Andrea, a seasoned professional, found that the program deepened her understanding and solidified her place at the decision-making table. For Celma, coming from a political background, the program allowed her to update and formalize her industry knowledge, providing her with both technical expertise and a powerful network.

Continuing the Dialogue for a more inclusive Future

IE University’s panel event was a testament to the ongoing conversation about gender equality in real estate. As the panel came to a close, it was clear that the journey towards a more inclusive and equitable real estate sector is far from complete. By embracing diverse perspectives, the sector can create a more balanced and vibrant future. Promoting equal opportunities not only benefits women but also leverages diverse talents that can drive greater creativity, innovation, and growth.
