Have you heard of a career path in Technical Apparel Design?
Technical apparel design is an exciting and rewarding field that allows you to repeatedly solve new problems in any industry or trade you choose! And no, you don’t need to be a fashion designer to do this.
What is Technical Apparel Design? The simple definition of technical apparel design is creating clothing that provides performance-specific characteristics while also looking aesthetically appealing. Technical apparel can be a garment, fabric or accessory. It may help keep you dry, warm or cool depending on whether you’re playing in hot conditions or participating in an outdoor activity like hiking or snowboarding. Technical apparel might also be a safety item such as protective Kevlar clothing for police officers and firefighters.
Technical apparel design refers to the integration of two different areas of study — technical and artistic. A technical designer is probably more practical in thinking as she/he will have knowledge of how materials work, measurements, calculations, evaluating of new technologies and developing patterns or technical drawings for manufacturing. Meanwhile, the artistic side will give you the freedom to come up with designs which can be conceptualized.
