Autonomous systems bring together mechanical engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence and systems control. The energy transition requires engineers who can work across chemistry, materials, technology and data.

At the University of Groningen, this way of thinking is part of the engineering environment. You can build deep technical expertise while looking beyond the boundaries of a single discipline, and connect your education to research, innovation and industry.

Technical depth, with room to look beyond your discipline

A Master’s in Engineering should give you more than a strong technical foundation. It should also prepare you to work on problems that don’t fit neatly into one field.

Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering brings together research and education across areas including mechanical and industrial engineering, materials engineering, artificial intelligence, systems and control, energy, chemical engineering and biomedical engineering.

This creates opportunities to combine perspectives that might normally sit in separate departments. Depending on your programme, you can take courses outside your immediate specialisation, work on interdisciplinary projects and connect your Master’s research to research groups working in other fields.

The result is not breadth for its own sake. It is the ability to apply your technical knowledge in a wider context.

Building the technology of tomorrow

One example is the research taking place around next-generation computing.

Today’s computer architecture faces growing challenges as AI applications demand more computing power and energy. Researchers at Groningen are exploring whether new materials and new approaches to computing can help overcome some of these limitations.

Professor Tamalika Banerjee, Professor of Physics and Spintronics, works on semiconductor and magnetic materials and brain-inspired computing. Her research has contributed to the development of memristor-based technologies in which memory and processing can be brought closer together, potentially enabling faster and more energy-efficient computing. Her work has also led to IMChip, a Groningen-based academic startup developing next-generation AI chip technology.

What makes this particularly relevant for engineering students is the range of expertise involved. Materials science, physics, mathematics, AI and chip design come together to address one technological challenge.

And this is not research happening in isolation. Groningen’s engineering researchers collaborate with high-tech companies on increasingly autonomous manufacturing processes, including technologies relevant to the semiconductor industry.

From the lab to the factory floor

Research is one side of the story. The other is learning how technology works in practice.

Engineering students in Groningen can gain experience through internships, research projects and collaborations with companies. Depending on the programme, projects and theses can be carried out with an industry partner or within the University’s research environment.

The Groningen Engineering Center provides a platform connecting engineering research, education and industry. Across the Northern Netherlands, researchers work with companies and knowledge institutions on areas such as smart manufacturing, advanced production, robotics and digitalisation. The Region of Smart Factories, for example, brings together companies and knowledge institutes to develop technologies for more intelligent, flexible and connected manufacturing.

For students, this can make the transition from theory to application very tangible

From Mechanical Engineering to high-tech industry

Niek Veldboom chose the MSc in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Smart Factories. During his Master’s, he explored subjects ranging from mathematics and robotics to materials science. He also gained practical experience through an internship at NTS Drachten, a high-tech company in the Northern Netherlands.

Today, Niek works as a System Industrialisation Engineer at ASML.

His journey illustrates something important about studying engineering in Groningen: opportunities in high-tech industry are not necessarily somewhere far away. The Northern Netherlands itself has a network of technology companies where students can gain hands-on experience and work on real engineering challenges. The Smart Factories track, for example, was developed in close collaboration with high-tech companies in the region.

From Industrial Engineering to ASML

Thijmen Pille followed a different route. After completing the MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management, he moved into the high-tech semiconductor industry and now works at ASML as a System Install Coordinator.

During his Master’s, Thijmen developed the analytical and management skills he now uses in his work at ASML. His experience shows that an engineering degree does not have to lead to a single type of technical role. Combining technology with process optimisation, robotics and management can open different routes into high-tech industry.

Where different technologies meet

The same interdisciplinary approach appears across Groningen’s engineering research.

In autonomous systems, for example, researchers combine mechanical engineering, robotics, computing science, AI, and systems and control to develop technologies such as autonomous robots and smart manufacturing systems.

In advanced materials, researchers work on technologies ranging from semiconductor materials and spintronic devices to smart materials, sensors and energy-related applications.

And engineering does not stop at traditional industrial applications. Through the University of Groningen’s connection with its University Medical Center, students and researchers can also work at the intersection of technology, medicine and life sciences. Biomedical engineering, for example, includes research into medical robotics, sensors and image-guided surgery.

This is one of the advantages of studying engineering within a broad research university: the problem you are trying to solve does not have to determine which discipline you belong to.

Preparing for a career that hasn’t been defined yet

The engineering jobs of tomorrow will not necessarily look like the engineering jobs of today.

That is why a strong Master’s education needs to combine technical knowledge with the ability to learn, collaborate and apply that knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.

Whether your interests lie in semiconductor technology, smart manufacturing, AI, robotics, energy or another area of engineering, Groningen gives you the opportunity to develop a technical specialisation while connecting it to a wider scientific and industrial ecosystem.

You can pursue research. You can work with companies. You can gain experience through internships and projects. And you can explore connections between disciplines that may lead you somewhere you did not initially expect.

The future of engineering is interdisciplinary.
