When Simona first decided to study computer science, she often faced skepticism. “Isn’t that more suitable for men?” people would ask. For her, the question never made sense. “Computer science is about logic, creativity, and problem-solving skills that have no gender,” she says.

From E-Learning to Cybersecurity and AI
Simona’s career has always evolved with the changing landscape of technology. Early experiences in software development soon led her to academia, where she found greater purpose in research and teaching.
Her PhD journey opened new doors: first into cybersecurity, then into AI and digital transformation, and later back into e-learning, which became even more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, her research blends these areas, from AI applications in education to building stronger cybersecurity awareness, reflecting the dynamic and interconnected nature of technology itself.

Along her path, Simona observed a recurring challenge: many young women underestimate their own abilities in STEM. One student once told her she loved the subject but felt she could never match the boys’ “natural talent.” With guidance and persistence, that same student finished top of her class.
“It’s rarely about ability,” Simona explains. “Often it’s about perception. Women just need the confidence to see that consistent effort can outweigh supposed ‘giftedness.’”
This insight inspired Simona to participate in numerous gender equality projects, from INTEGER to WIDCON, working to break stereotypes and create environments where women feel encouraged to pursue and lead in digital fields.
